Enemy Types & Damage Counter Matrix
Enemy Counter Matrix: 5 Threat Families × 4 Damage Layers
Every lost run in EmberCrown: Roguelike TD Game traces back to one drafting mistake: buying the damage type the wave does not care about. Physical volleys vanish into a fire lord, freeze cards do nothing to ice units, and single-target burst feeds a splitter. This is the full counter matrix — five enemy families, four damage layers, and the pick order that stops you from wasting a draft.
The Five Enemy Families
Every wave is built from Corruption, Ice, Fire, Elite and Boss profiles. Units inside a profile share a resistance pattern, which is why learning five profiles beats memorizing 52 matchups. The labels overlap: a frost guard is Ice and Elite at the same time. Read the family as the damage layer this wave demands, not as a species list.
Counter Matrix: Family × Damage Layer
| Family | Physical | Magic / True | Freeze / Control | AoE Clear | Never do this |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corruption Slimes and mutants — representative IDs 3001, 3002, 3103, 3203, 4202 | Weak — arrows kill the small ones fine | Strong — magic clears split-spawn bodies | Medium — slows help, but they still reach the wall | Mandatory — death splits and acid trails punish single-target | Single-target burst into a splitter |
| Ice Frozen beasts and frost-armored guards — representative IDs 3101, 3102, 3104, 4101, 4102 | Medium — plated fronts need sunder | Strong against armor pieces | Split — near-useless on 3102/4102, still slows 3101/3104 | Low — they come in small, heavy packs | Freezing a frost-armored unit (3102/4102) |
| Fire Imps, fire lords and magma — representative IDs 3201, 3202, 3203, 3204, 4201 | Useless against the fire lord (ID 3202) | Required — the only answer to physical immunity | Medium — slow the DOT carriers before they reach infantry | Strong — imp packs and magma trails cluster | Melee infantry into fire DOT |
| Elite Elite armored units — representative IDs 3006, 4001, 4101, 4201, 4202 | Weak — armor absorbs the volley | Strong | Medium — elites are slow but hit hard | Low — elites demand focused fire | Archers alone into an elite pack |
| Boss IDs 5001–5002, multi-bar bosses | Only after armor is stripped | Best single-target layer | High value — freeze cancels charge-ups | Required for adds, not for the boss bar | Burst spent on the summon wave |
The Four Damage Layers, Explained
Twelve Monsters and the Exact Answer
If you only remember a dozen entries, remember these. Each one is the monster that ends runs for a specific reason:
Draft Decision Tree
- Physical immunity on preview (Fire family, armored elites): take magic or armor sunder, even if the card looks weaker than the flashy burst option.
- Splitter or swarm on preview (Corruption family, bat packs): take AoE clear. Single-target cards lose value the moment a corpse becomes two bodies.
- Rushers or flyers on preview: take freeze or a reach upgrade. Damage you never land is not damage.
- Boss on preview: take whatever strips armor, then hold every burst card for the boss bar itself.
- Nothing threatening on preview: take economy or a permanent stat card. This is the only safe window for greed.
Why the Matrix Beats Memorizing 52 Monsters
The bestiary exists so you can look up a single ID, not so you can memorize all 52. In a run you only get three cards and a few seconds, so the useful unit of knowledge is the family. Once you can read a preview as "Corruption plus Elite", the draft answer is automatic: AoE for the bodies, sunder for the plating. Monster-specific knowledge is the tiebreaker, not the plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the enemy types in EmberCrown?
The roster holds 52 monsters, and their threat profiles fall into five families: Corruption (slimes and mutants), Ice, Fire, Elite armored units, and Boss. A unit can sit in two families at once — a frost guard is both Ice and Elite — so read the family as the threat this wave asks you to answer, not as an exclusive species list.
Does EmberCrown have elemental damage types?
Yes, in practice. Physical arrow damage is the base layer, magic and lightning effects skip physical armor entirely, freeze and slow effects scale with control uptime, and armor-sunder passives convert raw damage into true damage against plated targets.
What do I draft if the wave preview shows a mixed wave?
Draft for the threat you cannot survive, not the threat you can already kill. A mixed wave with three physical-immune units and twenty weak slimes is a magic problem, not a body-count problem — the twenty slimes die to whatever you already own.
Which single passive covers the most enemy families?
Armor-sunder. Twilight Assault answers elites, fire lords and the Goblin Sovereign in one card, and it is never a dead pick, because every family past wave ten carries enough effective HP for percentage reduction to matter.
